Unplugged is Overrated!

At 8:00 p.m. on the evening of June 13th we had a severe thunderstorm that knocked out power to our area for 40 hours! Yes, 40 hours!

We were sure that all would be restored in a few hours...like always. This became a different experience. Like the ones we experience with snow and ice outages. No power, no Internet, no phone, no nothing! No problem, we could do this!

At first we were good troopers and adapted to our powerless situation. Then, when we had no way to recharge our "stuff"...things began to get serious! Strangely enough, the school where I teach had power. So, we packed up all our "stuff" and went to school to recharge it all.

I figured that as soon as we did this, the power would come back. But...No!

We have a gas grill and so we were fine and there were stores and restaurants near us that were open. We settled into a "don't abandon the ship or our dogs" mentality. By Friday evening we needed ice. We loaded up at a nearby store and filled our coolers. We were still just fine. We could grill out and drink cold drinks.

The worse part was trying to sleep. It was hot and still and so very dark. The dogs panted and breathed shallow breaths. They were up and they were down. They heard every single noise and leaf rustle outside. We didn't have hot water to wash dishes or shower. Saturday morning we were mad and tired and didn't want to take it anymore! According to the app we had, our power was to be restored Saturday afternoon. Really?!! And just like clockwork, it was so.  The whole system flickered and beeped and magically was back up, except for Internet which followed a few hours later. We were so excited and happy to be back in business! Interestingly, I continued my projects outside while the house cooled down. Just knowing it was there for me was enough!

We could plug in our "stuff" and be happy and comfortable and shower again!

We learned that we could go with the flow but being without our plugged in "stuff" was now very hard for us. Now and then, I hear that we should unplug for awhile and I am here to say that being unplugged is truly overrated!

The Summer Shave...

Frankie does like to be groomed and I don't like to take him to be groomed. He needed it and I had to be the "good mommy". Unfortunately, poodles need regular grooming to avoid "mats" and he had some.

So, it is like taking a lamb to be sheared...and voila....the summer shave. Did I mention that he doesn't like to be shaved?

He looks so different (scroll down to his before picture) and still... "my heart on 4 legs"!

Summer of 2013 has begun.

The Rest of the Year "Ketchup"

We made it through our Native American Unit, re-enactment of The First Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, Indians, Lincoln logs...and, of course, turkey headbands!

Then, the kids did a fantastic job learning all the songs and all their lines for the big Christmas Pageant. We used glitter and glue daily to create the angels which we made from flower pots and dowels.

Then, look at this cute ornament that my oldest daughter and I made for the kiddos.

Over Christmas Break, the janitors took everything out of our rooms to clean the floors and tried to put it all back...and I came back to a huge mess...I was not happy! Can you believe this!?

I pulled it together and we celebrated the new year and made Resolutions! Cute bulletin board!

Talked about Martin Luther King, Jr. and created a "Practice Peace" poster.

Made Pattern Block Snowflake Pictures...each one different, of course!

Made Mardi Gras Masks...

We tried once again to Catch a Leprechaun...with a rainbow and traps!

Celebrated Dr. Seuss! Oh, The Places We Read! Families e-mailed me photos of their child reading at home ~ so precious!

We sprouted seeds and we labeled parts of a flower...

We went to the zoo and had a great day. This was the inspiration for our non-fiction project on a zoo animal.

Finally, my kiddos graduated and then they all left for summer! So, here is my room as I try to pack it up and take home files and folders to pitch and purge.

And... That is how we spent the rest of the year together!!!

Hello Summer 2013!

From windsocks in my October classroom to my beloved porch with my beloved poodle...Hello Summer 2013! I have missed you!

Blaming my blogging absence wouldn't be fair to accuse the enormous workload, endless hours of planning, and a piles of paperwork...it would be wrong...right?

Here is Frankie who is so happy that I am home for summer! Now I need to work on my files and don't tell Frankie that he gets groomed next week!
